There are multiple avenues that shelters in the United States use to educate their communities:

  1. At the shelter - when someone is looking to adopt they will prompt them with all the necessary information such as the basic guidelines, best practices, importance of spaying/neutering, and balancing their expectations. They will also typically provide them a resource guide or pamphlet with additional instructions they can refer to once they are away from the shelter.
  2. In classrooms - Talking to children about the importance of spaying/neutering their pet has been very successful. The students are typically very receptive to the experts in pet care that come and talk at their school and will then persuade their parents to adopt the practices they were educated on.
  3. On a Website - Shelters also typically have a website that has a number of resources or links to external sites that are useful for first time pet-owners to ensure they are caring for their dog in a manner that is conducive to giving that animal the best life.
  4. Social Media - Lastly, and most easily accessible, is educating the community through social media. In talking to Argentinians, we found social media websites such as Instagram are often the first place they go to contact a shelter or learn more about how to deal with a stray animal they find on the street. Using tools such as infographics on a shelter social media account would be a very effective method to reach a large base of the community that requires very little investment from the shelter itself.
